A Creative Journey in Wood and Design
Hickory and Hope was born out of a love for creativity, craftsmanship, and the art of handmade design. It all started in my garage after my husband surprised me with a scroll saw for Christmas in 2024. What began as a simple gift quickly turned into a passion—I taught myself how to use the saw, experimenting through trial and error, always eager to take on new challenges. Every piece I create is a reflection of this journey, blending patience, skill, and a willingness to keep learning.
From Interior Design to Handmade Art
Before diving into woodworking, I spent over 15 years as an Interior Designer, bringing spaces to life with thoughtful details and creative vision. I graduated with a degree in Interior Design from NDSU, and while I eventually stepped away from the corporate world to help run my husband’s tree service business, my love for design never faded. I needed a way to keep creating, to work with my hands, and to bring my ideas to life—and that’s exactly what I found in woodworking.
Handcrafted with Precision and Passion
Every piece I create is designed by me, hand-cut with my scroll saw, hand-sanded, and painted—a true labor of love. I take pride in the details, ensuring each piece is crafted with precision and care. While I embrace new techniques and challenges, my goal remains the same: to create beautiful, meaningful artwork that speaks to you. I also incorporate wood from our tree service business to build custom frames, giving each piece a unique and natural finishing touch.
The Meaning Behind Hickory and Hope
The name Hickory and Hope is deeply personal and symbolic. Hickory represents strength, flexibility, and perseverance—qualities that resonate with my journey as both an artist and entrepreneur. Hickory trees grow slowly, teaching patience and the power of long-term commitment. Hope is about believing in possibilities, embracing the unknown, and trusting in what’s to come. Together, these words embody both the resilience and optimism that fuel my creative process.
A Studio Filled with Creativity and Companionship
My workshop isn’t just a place for creativity—it’s also home to a few special shop visitors. My pug, Chip, and Frenchie, Gus, love to keep me company, along with Cleo, the stray cat who decided we were her family. They bring laughter, a little chaos, and a lot of joy to my creative space. It’s a reminder that the best work happens when you’re surrounded by love and inspiration.
